Enjoying a Philly Cheesesteak!

Sunday, June 29, 2014

Today we started the day off at 7:30 from our Philadelphia hotel. We took off to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. We learned about all the history of the making of the  Declaration of Independence and even saw the rooms it was made and signed in. We walked through a little museum and learned the history of the Bell and then finally go to see the bell. It was really cool to see it! We also learned that it takes twelve strong men to lift the Liberty Bell. Tyler Blythe enjoyed a little cat nap after looking at the bell. Being in Philadelphia we had many delegates that had to enjoy a Philly Cheesesteak. They were very good! After enjoying lunch in the city we hopped on the bus and headed to DC   We checked in at the National 4-H Center as found out rooms. After some games of basketball against Minnesota and a meeting with our PA we got into our color groups. We talked about current issues and started writing our bills. We then joined our groups for our committees and started planning our different events. The pin trading was a blast! Getting pins from all the different states was really neat. We then had a little recap meeting about what happened today and what is happening tomorrow. We then all headed off for some much need rest.

Kansas CWF delegates started the day on the road leaving from Ohio and we made a morning stop and then we stopped for lunch, the majority of us ate Steak And Shake and they were not prepared for a lunch rush so it took us awhile to get through. As we made our way to Philadelphia many delegates found themselves enthralled by the trees (because we don't have many of those in Kansas), other related played cards and enjoyed movies. This afternoon when we arrived in Philadelphia it was our first real chance to get off the bus and sightsee. We went on a historical tour of Philadelphia where several of us acted as a living timeline and also played historical characters to help us better get an idea of some of the amazing history that Philadelphia has lent to our country. Following the tour we watched Philadelphia 360 which was a 3D showing in a 360 degree theater, at the end of the showing our pictures appeared on the screen showing that we are part of our Nation's history, it was our powerful moment, and we are all looking forward to making some of our own history on CWF. We then retired to our hotel where many of us ordered pizza, however some brave souls ventured over to an Indian resteraunt where many of the menu items could not be pronounced. Our day ended as we met and reflected.

From Reflections:
Pennsylvanians do not know what Canadian Bacon is;
Ten year old lacrosse playing boys from New Jersey have stereotypes about Kansas, including thinking we don't have cars, are huge rednecks, and all know Dorothy;
Marissa Bland may or may not have eaten bones;
Marietta has instructed us to text our parents (so if your child hasn't texted you. . .);
Phillip Werth is now Philips;
Laurin Wagner, Katie Buhler, Liz Johnson, and Haley Peterson, had the initiative to take their luggage up four flights of stairs;
We have now referred to ourselves as a mini army.

We loaded the bus at 7:30 and later stopped at a McDonalds at 9:00. After our McDonalds stop we worked on our chant. After the chant we watched National Treasure. We stopped for lunch at Cracker Barrel and then watched Epic. We arrived at the hotel and and had a variety of options for supper. A couple highlights of the day included: a couple of our delegates asked for a police escort to j-walk, played some very competitive Uno and card games, and Tim knocked a shade off at Ruby Tuesdays.

The first group met in Salina at 8am and left at 9am next we stopped at a rest stop and picked up more people. Then we stopped in Topeka and grabbed some lunch and picked up more people yet again. Then headed along the way to Missouri and made one final pick up. Ben spilt his pop and cleaned it up with his lion king pillow case. We also got a glimpse of the arch as we drove through Saint Louis. We stayed the night at the Drury Hotel ate supper and enjoyed swimming and socializing. At reflections we reflected upon what we did today! Some activities include underwater selfies in the pool, card games, getting race cars at Steak and Shake, Katie Buhler got hit by a car(paper of course), selfies with Steak and Shake hats. Then went and got a great night's sleep.
