Our day started out with a bit of much needed extra sleep and a few sore feet. Breakfast did not begin until 7:30 leaving a whole 30-45 minutes for extra sleep! Then we each headed to a strategy workshop where we read over the final bills and prepared for the congressional session. After that we boarded our lovely bus and headed to the National Cathedral. Everyone though it was one of the most amazing buildings we had ever seen both architecturally and spiritually. While at the cathedral we saw many different chapels, the place where Helen Keller is buried, and stood in the literal heart of Jesus (the center of the cross shaped building). Also a fun tidbit of information was that the cathedral has a Darth Vader gargoyle on one of its towers! We made our way back to the 4-H center where we revitalized our energy with a delicious lunch then set out for our mock congressional session. We met and debated the bills we had written including topics such as alternative energy vehicles, minimum wage, pay for college athletes, and crop insurance. There was great discussion and some tough decisions made. After our congressional session we attended committee meetings to finish any last details for our final activities or in some delegates case to hold a rad dance party. After our committee meetings we had an hour of time to get ready for the cultural heritage evening but for some of us it was used to catch some zzzzz's before our busy day tomorrow. As we prepared to leave, the wrath of Hurricane Arthur hit so we had a lovely group picture indoors then ran out to the bus where we had another experience when another bus decided to pull out and hit the edge of ours (props to William the bus driver for keeping his cool). After our interesting afternoon we headed to our cultural heritage evening in the town. We traveled to Toby's Dinner Theatre and ate a wonderful supper while watching the musical "Pirates if Penzance" everyone had a great time dressing up and watching the show with friends. We returned back to our home away from home and headed to our rooms for some much needed sleep.
On our way home we reflected upon:
An actor pulling a quarter out of Tyler's ear.
Kansas being well represented at the congressional session even though none of the bills were passed.
Katie and SaRae being wished happy birthday at the theatre (only a few days early).
Once again this is Katie Buhler saying goodnight.
